JV Gold
Spring 2011
Weekly Update
May 8th
This was another productive and growth-filled week for the JV White Team!  While still dealing with the colder
winds, rains, and March-type weather, we have still been able to get some good matches in.  The team is
really starting to "gel" as well.  Whether it be the tight van rides to the different locations, hanging around the
courts cheering for each other, or the many fun practices and matches together, we enjoy being with each
other representing Marquette High Tennis!

The week started out down in Oak Creek with a good number of guys making the trip for a cold and windy
match.   Oak Creek did have some challenging teams and players that seemed to stump us, but Matt Scott
and Joe Brink at one doubles and Jackson Weiss in three singles were both able to stay strong with solid
victories.  The next day at Shorewood, against a much smaller team and on only five courts, Matt Scott and
Kareem Malice paired up for one doubles to get another victory.  And, Zach Bodart, the 6'3" freshman is on
the rise, getting a solid victory at number four singles.  Just wait till his serve starts humming!  We hosted
Rufus King at Elm Grove on Friday.  With Rufus King bringing thirty players and JV White representing with
25, this turned into quite a battle.  Andrew Chandler pulled out another epic, come-from behind tie-breaker
victory at number two singles.  But, after twenty matches, Rufus King prevailed with a commanding 7-13 victory
over us.  We are learning how to play against many different styles of players in the ever-changing conditions,
and still developing the top-spin ground-strokes, slice serves, and solid volleys.  When these skills start to
solidify, this team will be a powerful force!  The week ended with a bang on Saturday morning for the dual
meet at Waukesha West against Waukesha South and Oconomowoc High schools.  Andrew Chandler at
number one, Ben Zellmer at number two, and the number three doubles of Mike Witkowiak and Logan Nelson
all came out with double victories.  Zach Bodart had another solid match against Oconomowoc at number four
singles.  All told, Marquette prevailed with 5-3 victories against both Oconomowok and Waukesha South.  We
were on and we are hungry for more as the season comes into its last week!  And, with matches Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this coming week, we are ready to play!

The Hilltoppers of the week, picked for their steady improvement through the season and solid performances
this week, including a come-from behind, tie-breaker victory against Waukesha South at the dual meet on
Saturday, is Mike Witkowiak and Logan Nelson.  This pair is on the rise and will be a force to be reckoned with
in days, weeks, and years ahead!  -Coach Krall

The Gold squad visited Oak Creek on an almost perfect day for tennis last Wed!  Matt Goblirtsch, Austin
Johnson and Mark Ninomiya all won easy victories at 1st, 2nd and 3rd singles respectively.
McCormick/Reznicek, Alston/Maloney and Bomberg/Schneider cruised past their opponents at 1st, 2nd and
3rd doubles.  Exhibition wins were had by Puck/McBride, Cornejo/Minim, and Alston/ Doyle.  At Sussex on
Friday we dodged raindrops and snuck a dual meet in with a very competitive Sussex-Hamilton squad.
McCormick/Reznicek & Alston/Maloney won hard fought victories at #1 & 2 doubles to lead our starting squad.
Our depth clearly showed, however in the exhibition matchups, with Ninomiya/McBride, Kinzey/King,
Seward/O'Callaghan and Doyle/Matt D. sweeping the exhibition side of the draw.  I am proud of the guys for
their sportsmanship and psitive attitude on the court.  Looks like we are having fun and improving significantly!

Gold squad Hilltopper of the Week is Mark Ninomiya who had great success with different partners all year.
He has been patient with our system and has delivered a strong performance in each match, regardless of
outcome.
