Varsity
Spring 2010
Weekly Update
May 4th
This past Saturday, the Varsity Team participated in the Whitefish Bay Quad with Madison Memorial, DePere
and host Whitefish Bay.  With thunderstorms the night before, the courts were surprising dry with puddles that
evaporated with the first few points of the opening round.

To start the morning, MUHS faced Madison Memorial.  We won all 8 matches in the round in straight sets.  Our
singles lineup consisted of #1 Tim Noack (6-3, 6-1), #2 Damon Niquet (6-0, 6-0), #3 Matt Lynch (6-0, 6-0), #4
Alex Smith (6-1, 6-0) and our extra match #5 Mike Gong (6-1, 6-0).  Our doubles lineup included the pairings of
#1 Sykes/E. Niquet (6-2, 6-1), #2 Porritt/Armbrust (6-1, 6-4), and #3 Steindorf/Muth (6-0, 6-3).

Round two was against Whitefish Bay and once again, MUHS swept the competition in some hard-fought
matches.  Freshman Damon Niquet represented Marquette at #1 singles against junior Jack Larson, who is one
of the top singles players in the state.  Damon played a strong first set winning the set 6-3.  In the second set,
Larson came back and after a few exchanges of breaks, Larson took the second set 5-7.  In the ten-point tie
break for the third set, Larson collapsed with severe foot cramping and eventually retired from the match.  Matt
Lynch played at #2 singles for MUHS and fought through a tough second set for a 6-0, 7-5 win against
freshman Matt Kavanaugh.  Alex Smith won his singles match and was first off the court with a 6-2, 6-0 at #3
singles.  Mike Gong came traded an early break in his #4 singles match but didn’t look back, winning (6-1, 6-2).

Alex Sykes and Ethan Niquet were in control of the match from the start in their 6-0, 6-1 victory at #1 doubles
against Jack Krugler and Pat Harrington.  CJ Armbrust and Jack Porritt stayed strong for their #2 doubles match
with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.  Matt Steindorf and Connor Muth teamed up for a tense first set (7-5) but closed the
door on Whitefish Bay with a 6-2 second set for the win at #3 doubles.  Adam Hurrle and Mark Bodalski battled
the wind for a 6-2, 6-2 win at #4 doubles.

For the final round of the day, Marquette met DePere for a round of five singles matches and three doubles
matches.  MUHS completed all their matches in straight-sets for an 8-0 win.  Adam Hurrle played his first singles
match of the year at #5 with a 7-5, 6-3 win.  Mike Gong hit solid, consistent strokes on his way to a 6-0, 6-2 win
at #4.  Alex Smith dropped one game in the second set in his #3 victory while Matt Lynch had a win at #2 with a
score of 6-3, 6-3.  Tim Noack improved his record with a 6-1, 6-3 win at #1 singles for the Hilltoppers.

Connor Muth and Matt Steindorf found their rhythm early in their match with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #3 doubles.  CJ
Armbrust and Jack Porritt finished their match with the same result (6-1, 6-2) at #2 doubles.  Alex Sykes and
Ethan Niquet dominated their match with their strong serving and net play at #1 doubles with a 6-0, 6-0 score.

Although MUHS finished with a perfect 24-0 record at the Whitefish Bay Quad, the Hilltoppers are working hard
on the courts this week during practice to prepare for their upcoming matches.  Wednesday afternoon, we host
Madison West at Elm Grove Park at 4pm.  Friday kicks off the Nicolet Invite which is a 16 team invite held Friday
and Saturday in the North Shore area.  I will send out more details (including start times and site locations) once
I learn more this week.  Teams participating in the invite include: Arrowhead, Brookfield Central, Brookfield East,
Homestead, Madison Memorial, Madison West, MUHS, Middleton, Neenah, Nicolet, Prairie School, Sheboygan
North, Shorewood, University School, Verona, & Whitefish Bay.  This invitational consistently provides excellent
competition every year and we hope for clear weather for this  weekend’s matches.  It’s a big weekend for the
team, because not only is it the Nicolet Invite, but MUHS’ Prom Saturday night.

After a big week of tennis, I am proud to announce that senior Tim Noack is this week’s Hilltopper of the Week!
Congratulations Tim on a number of key wins this past week!

We want to thank all our fans for their continual support of our program and welcome you to come cheer on the
team at any of our matches.

Thank you,

David R. Frank
