Varsity Spring 2010 Weekly Update May 18th
|
Over the past seven days, the MUHS Varsity team had another successful week as we lead up to the Greater
Metro Conference Tournament this Wednesday and Thursday. This past Wednesday, May 12, Marquette hosted
Brookfield East at Elm Grove Park.
Jack Porritt and CJ Armbrust represented MUHS at #1 doubles, and won their match 6-3, 6-1 over Brookfield East’s
Brian Klein and Dan Mackett. Jed Sekaran and Connor Muth played #2 doubles and fought hard to win in three
sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Adam Hurrle and Mark Bodalski played well at #3 doubles winning 6-0, 6-4. Damon Niquet and
Matt Steindorf teamed up for the extra match at #4 doubles winning in straight by dropping only two games in the
second set.
Mike Gong worked his way to a 6-4, 6-3 victory at #4 singles. Alex Smith dropped only two games in each set to
win in straight sets at #3 singles. Matt Lynch stayed extremely consistent playing his #2 singles match to win 6-1, 6-
0 against a very good player and state qualifier from 2009, Ben Klein. The match of the day came at #1 singles
where Tim Noack defeated fellow senior Drew Lied. Noack won the first set after a strong comeback from being
down but Lied took the second set to force the match to a third set. Noack went up 5-2 on Lied, but Lied fought his
way back to a tie-break. Noack kept his head and won the tie-break with a final match score of 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(3)
playing incredible tennis. The point that broke Lied’s back was when he was serving at 2-3 in the final tiebreak.
Tim played an excellent point and was moving Drew from deep corner to deep corner. Tim approached the net off
a very good approach and Drew threw up a defensive lob that the wind kept in the court over Tim’s left shoulder.
Tim tracked it down and had the guts to rip the backhand down the line with his back completely turned to the
court. Drew could only watch in disbelief as the ball passed right by him. Tim won three out of the next four points
to close out the match.
Due to the uncertain weather, Thursday’s match against Middleton was moved to Friday at Western Racquet
Club. Alex Smith stepped up to the #1 singles spot to face Middleton’s Ian Markson. Smith won in straight sets 6-
2, 6-4 finishing his match off with a booming ace. CJ Armbrust and Jack Porritt both moved over to the singles side
of the lineup to compete at #2 and #3 singles respectively. Armbrust played a great match to win 6-3, 6-1 with
strong serving and solid ground strokes. Jack Porritt transitioned to singles well with a 6-2, 6-4 win for Marquette.
Mike Gong faced Jon Luskin at #4 singles for the second time in a week with nearly the same result, only inversing
his set scores from last week; winning 6-0, 6-4.
Alex Sykes and Ethan Niquet had solid outing at #1 doubles winning 6-1, 6-0. Matt Lynch and Damon Niquet
partnered for a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #2 doubles and Adam Hurrle and Mark Bodalski fought through another tough
match with Middleton’s #3 doubles team, but fell short 7-6(3), 0-6, 2-6.
Saturday morning was an early start for the Hilltoppers as we traveled to Manitowoc for the Manitowoc Invite
against first round opponents Franklin. With only four courts for each round of the tournament, the schools put on
the lower flights of their lineups first. Mark Bodalski lost his match at #4 singles 1-6, 2-6 and Mike Gong won his #3
singles match against his hometown school, 6-0, 6-0. Adam Hurrle and Connor Muth could not overcome their
opponents at #3 doubles and fell 2-6, 3-6. Jed Sekaran and Matt Steindorf also could not outlast their opponents
and lost 4-6, 3-6 at #2 doubles.
Alex Smith brought another victory to Marquette with a 6-2, 6-3 win at #2 singles while Tim Noack had the third
victory at #1 singles winning 6-1, 6-1. MUHS and Franklin were tied with 3 wins each and the deciding match was
at #1 doubles where CJ Armbrust and Jack Porritt came out on top with a 6-1, 6-4 win to finish off the first round on
a positive note.
The second round of the Manitowoc invite was against the Verona Wildcats. Marquette won the round 8-0 with
wins across the lineup. Damon Niquet played #1 singles (6-1, 6-0), Tim Noack #2 (6-1, 6-2), Matt Lynch #3 (6-0, 6-
2), and Mike Gong at #4 (6-1, 6-1). Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes played #1 doubles (6-2, 6-1), Jack Porritt and CJ
Armbrust at #2 (6-1, 6-0), Jed Sekaran and Matt Steindorf at #3 (6-0, 6-0), and Mark Bodalski and Adam Hurrle
won the first set in their extra match at #4 doubles but were unable to complete their match so the final round could
start in a timely fashion.
Marquette faced rival Homestead in the third round to determine 1st and 2nd place at the Invite. Matt Lynch was
the first match off the court for Marquette winning at #3 singles against Dillon Kelly 6-2, 6-1. Alex Smith brought a
second win for the team winning 6-3, 6-4 over Nikhil Ramnaryan. Jed Sekaran and Matt Steindorf were unable to
pull out their match, falling 3-6, 1-6 to Homestead at #3 doubles. Jack Porritt and CJ Armbrust traded breaks in the
first set, but were able to hold and break to win the set 7-5 with a decisive 6-1 second set. Tim Noack clinched the
Marquette victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over Alex Mattson at #2 singles – a match filled with long rallies and nail-
biting points. Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes overcame a first set deficit to play some incredible points to bring their
match to a third set where they dominated play with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Connor Peck and Bryce Toburen at #1
doubles.
Connor Muth and Mark Bodalski teamed up for the extra match at #4 doubles for Marquette. They had a slow start
to lose the first set, but quickly found their groove in the second set and didn’t let up in the third set where Muth
served the match out with consistency as the duo faced a number of deuces before they closed the match out 2-6,
6-4, 6-2. The last match on the court was a battle between two of the top players in the state: Damon Niquet and
Alex Jesse. The first set went to Homestead 3-6, but Damon fought back to take the second set in a tie-break, 7-6
(4), but Jesse could not be stopped in the third set. He was up 4-1 and 5-2 on Damon and Damon started to come
back and Alex started to get a little tight. However, Jesse showed why he is one of the top players in the state by
closing out the match with several winners and Damon came up a few points short to lose the third set 3-6. Both
players played brilliantly and Marquette took the final round with a 6-2 win over Homestead.
After a big weekend, the team prepares for the Conference Tournament starting Wednesday at Brookfield East
(#1 & #2 Singles and #1 Doubles), Brookfield Central (#3 & #4 Singles), and Wirth Park (#2 & #3 Doubles) at
3pm. The Tournament will continue on Thursday at Brookfield East starting at 4pm. We hope to see you out there
to cheer on the Hilltoppers.
Congratulations to Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes for being the Hilltoppers of the week! Check out their write-up on
the homepage. GO HILLTOPPERS!
