The Varsity Tennis Team had another strong week in the post-season last week during Subsectionals and Sectionals. Subsectionals were held at Merrill Park last Monday, and despite the hot court temperatures, the Hilltoppers played very solid tennis. Subsectionals is a seeded tournament played by flights. Marquette received the #1 seed at each flight and #1 singles (Damon Niquet) and #1 doubles (Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes) received byes advancing to Sectionals automatically held on Thursday.
Jed Sekaran and Connor Muth represented MUHS at #3 doubles against Milwaukee South and served their way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Jack Porritt and CJ Armbrust also played with consistency to win 6-0, 6-0 at #2 doubles against Milwaukee Arts. Alex Smith won 6-0, 6-2 at #4 singles against Milwaukee Riverside. Matt Lynch defeated Pius’ #3 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Tim Noack won over Milwaukee Hamilton’s #2 singles 6-0, 6-0.
With MUHS winning all their matches, the entire team advanced to Sectionals at Nicolet High School at their flight where the Marquette Subsectional crosses over with the Nicolet Subsectional. At #1 singles, Damon Niquet faced Mustafa Cali from Milwaukee Washington and won 6-0, 6-0. At #2 doubles, Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes faced Milwaukee Madison with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Court conditions were a little windy but the Hilltoppers learned to adjust accordingly. Connor Muth and Jed Sekaran took on Charlie Bostwick and Riley Mehls of Whitefish Bay at #3 doubles. Sekaran and Muth came out strong to win the match 6-0, 7-5. CJ Armbrust and Jack Porritt pulled out a three set victory over Jacon Levings and Andy Krugler of Whitefish Bay at #2 doubles (6-2, 6-7(3), 6-2). Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes found their groove late in the first set against Whitefish Bay’s #1 doubles team of Jack Krugler and Patrick Harrington with a 6- 4, 6-2 victory.
Marquette was just as successful in the singles flights with Alex Smith winning over Graham Martens of Whitefish Bay 6-2, 6-3 at #4 singles. Matt Lynch forced a few breaks to win 6-2, 6-2 over Eli Hayes of Whitefish Bay at the #3 singles flight. Tim Noack defeated Jonothan Lopez of Nicolet at #2 singles 6-0, 6-1 and Damon Niquet won over David Yarmulnik of Nicolet 6-0, 6-2 at #1.
Marquette reached the Sectional finals at every flight where every win in the final round would mean a first place finish at the Sectional for that flight. Alex Smith outplayed David Goredetsky of Nicolet to win 6-4, 7-6(2) to take first place at #4 singles in the Sectional. Matt Lynch also took first with a 6-2, 6-3 win over David Winston of Nicolet at #3 singles.
Connor Muth and Jed Sekaran avenged a loss earlier in the season against the previously undefeated #3 doubles team of Jacob Levey and Quinn Ellsworth of Nicolet with a solid 6-3, 6-4 win. Jack Porritt and CJ Armbrust placed first with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ethan Taxman and Richard Kim of Nicolet at #2 doubles.
Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes dominated the second set for a 6-4, 6-2 win over Gard Pecor and Trevor Katzban of Nicolet. Tim Noack played with precision for a 6-0, 6-2 win at #2 singles over Matt Kavanagh of Whitefish Bay. Damon Niquet battled through a tough match, but Jack Larson of Whitefish Bay came up with the win (3-6, 4-6) at #1 singles.
With top Sectional finishes at six of the seven flights, Marquette earned a trip to the Team State Tournament in Madison, June 11-12. This coming Thursday (June 3) kicks off the Individual State Tournament at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison. We were fortunate to have all ten of our players qualify for the tournament. You can view the draw and schedule at http://www.wiaawi.org/index.php?id=439. Four of our flights received seeds for the tournament. In Division I singles draw, Damon Niquet received the #3 seed while Tim Noack received the #4 seed. In the doubles draw, Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes received the #2 seed with Jack Porritt and CJ Armbrust representing MUHS as the #5 seed.
The Individual State Tournament begins Thursday afternoon, and Matt Lynch will have the first match for Marquette starting around 2pm at the Nielsen Tennis Center (1000 Highland Avenue, Madison).
We are very proud of our team, not only of the 10 who qualified for the Individual Tournament, but all 14 players who represented Marquette this season in matches and at practices pushing each other to bring out the best tennis in each other. We wish our team good luck this weekend, as they compete individually and gear up for next weekends’ Team State Tournament.
Thank you for your support and we hope to see you in Madison over the next two weekends! For those of you following the team online, the draw results are updated periodically on the WIAA website.
Congratulations to Connor and Jed for being the Hilltoppers of the week!
