The 2010 MUHS Tennis Season was very special season for our team, especially our seniors; when they were freshmen in 2007, MUHS captured the WIAA Division I State Title. When they were sophomores in 2008, MUHS captured the State Title. When they were juniors in 2009, MUHS captured the State Title. And when they were seniors in 2010, MUHS once again captured the State Title. This fourth consecutive Team Title is the longest such streak in Division 1 Tennis since the conception of the Team Tournament in 1995.
Our trip this past weekend to the Nielsen Center in Madison for the WIAA Team State Tournament was the culmination our players have been working hard all season for, and being able to take home the State Title on top of this accomplishment is something our players will never forget. This State Championship is also the 28th in our program’s history.
I am extremely happy with our team for peaking their tennis skills at the Team State Tournament - the biggest stage of the season and being able to deal with the pressure successfully. Our team embraced our goal of reaching the Team State finals and represented themselves and MUHS well by focusing on smaller goals during the season and on constantly improving rather than being overwhelmed by the larger goal of winning a fourth consecutive Team State Championship.
In the first round, we defeated Greater Metro Conference rival Brookfield Central 5-2. Our doubles teams lost only six games all together and our singles propelled the team to the semi-finals. Tim Noack gave us the fourth, go- ahead win into the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. This is Tim’s eighth clinch of ten matches in the Team State Tournament over the last four years.
Alex Smith lost a tough match 1-6, 6-3, 1-6 to Central’s Andrew Denu. Alex was able to dominate in the second set and frustrated his opponent with consistently hard groundstrokes and relentless attacking. Alex fought through the third set, but his opponent played flawlessly in that final stretch, hitting winners and catching several lines from all angles of the court.
Matt Lynch also lost a tough match to Jordan Patt at #3 Singles with a score of 4-6, 3-6. This was their third match against each other of the season and previously they had split matches with Matt winning in three sets at the Conference Tournament. Matt was hitting the ball extremely well, but Jordan found his breaks at the right time to take the match in two sets.
In the semifinals, we faced off against Kenosha Tremper. We faced Tremper earlier in the season in a scrimmage, so we knew we needed to start out strong. Our doubles teams again set the tone for the match by winning two matches in straight sets and the third in three. Alex Sykes and Ethan Niquet defeated Kenosha Tremper’s #1 doubles team 6-7(0), 6-3, 6-3. This Kenosha Tremper duo was the #1 Seed and 4th place finisher at the Individual State Tournament the weekend before. Our #2 doubles team of Jack Porritt and CJ Armbrust won decisively 6-1, 6-1. Connor Muth and Jed Sekaran fought their way through a 6-2, 6-1 victory and relied heavily on their serving and teamwork to come out on top. Alex Smith found his groove #4 singles winning (6-1, 6-0). Matt Lynch finished his match quickly (6-0, 6-0), to win at #3 singles. Tim Noack shut down his opponent in the second set with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Tim played excellent tennis to defeat a very good opponent in David Carswell, who was the #12 seed in the Individual Tournament. Damon Niquet earned the team’s seventh win in the semi-finals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #1 singles over John Carswell (the 5th place finisher at the Individual State Tournament).
Going into the finals, we faced Homestead; a team we faced once in a head-to-head dual (winning 5-2 without our final lineup) and twice in tournament play (victories with scores of 6-1 and 5-2). Our #2 doubles team rolled to a quick and impressive victory (6-4, 6-0) keeping a perfect record against Justin Kirtley and David Stockbridge in their fifth meeting this season. This Homestead team was undefeated against the rest of the competition that they played all year with the exception of Jack and CJ besides their match earlier in the day versus Eau Claire Memorial. #1 doubles followed shortly after with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Connor Peck and Bryce Toburen. This was the first straight sets victory for our #1 Team over Homestead this year. Each of the prior three meetings were closer and closer and all went to three sets. So Ethan and Alex really set the tone early and showed their opponents that this day would be Marquette’s. Our #3 doubles took the first set in a tiebreak, but split sets in the second set tiebreak. Alex Smith fought through loud a Homestead crowd to win in two sets at #4 singles 6-2, 6-4 in his most decisive victory over Homestead’s Nikhil Ramnarayan. Matt Lynch and Tim Noack took the court at #3 and #2 singles respectively.
With #3 doubles still battling on the court, MUHS still needed the decisive fourth match to claim the 2010 title. Matt Lynch took his first set 6-3, while next door Tim followed a few minutes later with his first set 6-4. Tim and Matt both went up 5-1 in the second set and started their final game within seconds of each other. All eyes were on Tim and Matt to see who would clinch the title. Would Tim, who clinched the last three years? Or would freshman Matt Lynch? Everyone held their breath as Matt served out match point as Tim was at thirty-all. Matt came through to garner the most important match, and clinched the Championship title with the fourth victory for the team two and a half minutes before Tim dismantled his opponent 6-4, 6-1. Connor and Jed added the sixth victory with a 7-6(4), 6- 7(5), 6-4 win at #3 doubles. Damon Niquet tacked on the seventh team win in two sets (6-1, 6-4) defeating Alex Jesse and avenging his loss a week earlier in the Individual State finals.
Tim Noack passed clinching the Team State title, as he did for MUHS for the three consecutive seasons to his teammate, freshman Matt Lynch. Matt had an eerily similar post-season to Tim’s freshman post-season by being knocked out of the Individual State tournament in the second round by the #9 seed in three sets on the same court as Tim had in 2007. The most impressive feat of the tournament is that Marquette only lost a single set in the semi- finals and finals of the State Tournament.
If you would like to see video footage of the State Tournament, FSN will air highlights from the Individual State Tournament on July 19, at 9:30pm and the Team State Tournament following at 10:00pm.
We are extremely proud of all the efforts of all 14 members of our 2010 Varsity team and every single player contributed to the success of the team. This is a very special year for the team, especially the seniors who have capped every spring season with a State Championship. We are sad to see our seniors leave MUHS, but look forward to their accomplishments as they head off to college. We also look forward to the future of our tennis program as our four teams expand the program annually with our no-cut JV Gold team. We see a lot of talent on our courts, but more importantly we see a lot more hard work from young men striving to reach their full potential at MUHS.
We also acknowledge the extra efforts of players each season in various categories, voted by the coaching staff. These awards were announced and handed out at the end of the season party we had Saturday night at the Noack residence. Listed below are the 2010 recipients:
Hardest Working Player – Ethan Niquet (’10) and Tim Noack (’10)
Most Improved Player – Connor Muth (’12) and Alex Smith (’12)
“Mike Hutz (’06)” Team Supporter Award – Mark Bodalski (’10)
Best Sportsmanship – CJ Armbrust (’13)
Senior Award – Alex Sykes (’10)
I also want to congratulate the graduating seniors and wish them well in their future endeavors. All four of these players contributed significantly to our team and represented the school well throughout their MUHS Tennis careers. Listed below are their career records for our Varsity Team.
Mark Bodalski – 1 year Varsity – 14-7 (66.7%)
Ethan Niquet – 4 years Varsity – 105-13 (88.9%)
Tim Noack – 4 years Varsity – 116-12 (90.6%)
Alex Sykes – 4 years Varsity – 87-14 (86.1%)
All of our seniors contributed to the season and the State Championship. We will miss their leadership and personalities, but are thankful for their contributions to the MUHS Tennis program over their years at Marquette University High School.
CJ Armbrust and Jack Porritt were a key position for us all year. Jack moved up from #3 doubles last year to team with CJ and CJ did an excellent job stepping up as a freshman at #2 doubles. CJ and Jack finished the year with the best record of our doubles tandems at 33-2. Our doubles lineup was definitely a strength this year, but having CJ and Jack at #2 was something that no team in the state could compete with. Congratulations to CJ and Jack for being the Hilltoppers of the Week.

After the high school season completed on Saturday, many of our team members competed immediately on Sunday morning in the Wisconsin Closed, the largest tournament of the year in Wisconsin which qualifies players for the Midwest Closed. Our Marquette Team had a great showing with eleven competitors from our tennis program and each of the players did very well, especially considering the emotional high they were on from winning state the day prior.
Congratulations to the players that advanced to the Midwest Closed which will be held beginning on June 26th in Indianapolis:
Damon Niquet – 1st Place in Boys 18’s defeating #1 Seed Brandon Debot in the Quarterfinals and #2 Seed Drew Lied in the Finals Tim Noack – Quarterfinalist in Boys 18’s and defeated Mike Treis and Connor Peck Ethan Niquet - Quarterfinalist in Boys 18’s and defeated Sam Walker, Rishi Karri, and Bryan Miles Matt Lynch – Consolation Quarterfinalist in Boys 16’s and defeated the #9 seed and #6 seed, Kyle Dunn, who was also the #8 seed in the Individual State Tournament Alex Smith – Consolation Quarterfinalist and defeated teammate Connor Muth in the qualifying match to advance CJ Armbrust – Consolation Round of 16 and defeated #11 seed Scott Wall from De Pere
