The Marquette High Varsity Tennis Team had a big weekend at the Brookfield East Invite. Despite the rain, the Hilltoppers moved indoors to face three top teams in the state. MUHS traveled up to Fond du Lac Saturday morning to face Neenah at the Center Court Tennis Club. A number of parents made the trip to cheer on their sons, and we are grateful for the fan support.
Our singles lineup consisted of Tim Noack at #1, Damon Niquet at #2, Alex Smith at #3 and Mike Gong at #4. The singles players excelled on the court winning all their matches in straight sets playing solid tennis.
Doubles teams were equally impressive for Marquette with Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes at #1, Jack Porritt and CJ Armbrust at #2, Connor Muth and Matt Steindorf at #3, and Mark Bodalski and Jed Sekaran at #4. Niquet/Sykes and Porritt/Armbrust both won in straight sets in very impressive fashion. Muth and Steindorf split sets and worked hard to finish out the match with a 10-6 victory in the tiebreak replacing the third set. Neenah always has excellent doubles teams and this year is no exception. So it was a great accomplishment to do as well as we did.
Bodalski and Sekaran ended their extra match after one set (6-3). Matt Lynch was slated to play the extra match at #5 singles, but due to court availability and time constraints, Lynch was only able to complete his match warm-up before the team packed up and headed Lake Country Racquet Club in Hartland where MUHS faced their next two opponents.
In round two of the Brookfield East Invite, MUHS faced Eau Claire Memorial at Lake Country’s indoor courts. Tim Noack won his match at #1 singles beating sophomore Christian Phelps 6-4, 6-4. Damon Niquet dropped one game at #2 singles, and Alex Smith won 6-4, 6-1 at #4 singles. At #3, Matt Lynch played a hard-fought match and really picked up his game in the second set but lost in two.
Our doubles team stepped up to Eau Claire Memorial’s challenge. Ethan Niquet and Alex Sykes won their #1 match against another senior pair 6-3, 6-1. Porritt and Armbrust combined for a 6-2, 6-2 win at #2 while Muth and Steindorf came back from a 1st set deficit and pulled out a first set tie break and took the second set as well (7-6(4), 6-2). Mark Bodalski and Mike Gong played the extra match and won 7-5, 6-2. Overall MUHS took the round against Eau Claire Memorial 7-1.
For the final round of the invite, MUHS sent their doubles out first to face Brookfield Central. CJ Armbrust and Jack Porritt stepped up to the #1 spot and won 6-4, 6-1 with some strong serves and solid volleys. Connor Muth and Matt Steindorf played solid #2 doubles winning 6-2, 6-2. Mark Bodalski and Mike Gong fell to Central’ s #3 doubles and Alex Sykes and Jed Sekaran partnered for an extra doubles match, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Once some courts opened at Lake Country, MUHS sent their singles out against Central. Damon Niquet and Michael Treis faced off at #1 singles and Damon dominated play, winning 6-0, 6-1. Tim Noack won 6-3, 6-2 over sophomore Jordan Patt at #2. Matt Lynch fought an impressive match at #3 singles against sophomore Jack Michael, losing the first set 2-6, then a strong comeback in the second set (6-4) forcing a ten point tie- break for the third set. Lynch stayed in some long, tough rallies, but eventually lost 9-11 in the tiebreak. Alex Smith showed his strength in a 6-1 first set and was down 2-3 in the second set and went on to win the next four games to give MUHS a 6-2 victory over Brookfield Central.
